Lack of Controller leads to Cartelization in Ear Implants

Based on a report in The Economic Times, Healthworld, who decides which ENT physician is trained to carry out cochlear implants?

With no authorized controlling body, it’s companies producing the implants. State governments that fund the surgery for poor patients and an association of doctors, each has its own random guidelines on who is a guide to train surgeons or who gets provided with implants.

Cochlear Implant Group of India (CIGI), a national association of ENT surgeons, audiologists, and rehabilitation specialists, had guidelines for the essential training under a mentor surgeon.

CIGI secretary Dr. Ameet Kishore stated that these were only guidelines and not compulsory as CIGI was not a controlling authority.
